Great article Stephen (like usual). I would love a way to get Lonzo and Will Barton, while keeping Thad. Not sure if that's possible though after reading your breakdown. Keep up the good work!
Thanks! Yeah I'm surprised there hasn't been more Will Barton to the Bulls buzz. He makes a ton of sense. I think he will get a multi year deal at around $10m per.
They can get both Lonzo and Barton, but they would have to lose Thad and Sato, fill out the rest of the roster with mostly minimum guys.
I keep having this weird feeling that the bulls are going to try to really go for it and make a run a both kyle lowry and Demar Derozan and being them together. Derozan would be the 6th man with Coby. I think this would put then in title contention i believe. What say you?
It would be extremely hard to open up enough cap space to get both of those guys. Lowry will probably make around $25 million, DeRozan $20m. That's $45 million in space you have to create.
I outlined how to get up to $39 million in this story. You'd have to trade Troy Brown and Coby White or Patrick Williams into a team's cap space and get no salary back. Giving away those guys would hurt. And your bench would be almost all guys on minimum salaries.
hey stephen, great article as always. i wish we could read more from you, as no one comes close to writing about the bulls like you do!
i understand the bulls' flirtation with ball, but is he really going to move the needle very much? sure, he brings much needed D next to zach, but pretty much handcuffs our flexibility for a while in terms of roster building, and he's not a good half court player, and am not yet convinced of his 3 point shot although it did seem to improve last year. there have been rumours of dejaunte murray whom i think would be a better fit (even though he can't shoot). what about trying to extract killian hayes from detroit for say coby (or anyone not named pat williams or zach). he's a long guard and very skilled defensively, and would slot in nicely next to him....especially as it's probable that they'll sign cade.

I'd like taking a flier on Hayes. He started off terrible but came on stronger later in the season when no one was watching.
Murray is great too and extremely underrated based on stuff I'm seeing from other Bulls fans. Great defender and solid all around guy that I tend to like. The problem is the Bulls dont have the pieces that would interest the Spurs. Presumably they'd move him to accelerate their timeline, and the Bulls don't have the high end vets they'd be interested in.
I was extremely high on Lonzo a year ago when his value was still low, and tried to drum up the trade enthusiasm. It makes less sense now that he's vastly improved his stock. It all depends on what his market is. If they can get him for $20 million annually, I would do it. At $25 million, I'd try to make a run at Conley or Lowry instead.
hey stephen, thanks for the prompt reply. i really like murray. loved him when the spurs drafted him at 29 or wherever it was (brilliantly as usual!). he's really shifty, good passer, great defender with a 6"10 wingspan, his only real weakness is his shooting, but we have plenty of those! ......would the spurs entertain a sign and trade with lauri?....(ummm...."no" the spurs are not stoopid!)
agreed on lonzo's salary. conley isn't leaving the jazz to come to the bulls, and lowry is either going home to phili or going to sun himself in miami. don't think he'd look at the bulls. basically we're screwed. unless AK pulls out some rabbit out of a hat, we're at best a 6th or 7th seed and unlikely to get out of the first round, with no draft capital to trade for the foreseeable future. oh how it pisses me off that a) we made the vooch trade in the first place in a very strong draft and b) we managed to completely screw up the end of season tank by winning a few meaningless games, as we do every year ,and leapfrogging above toronto to lose the 4th pick.....so stupid! i mean really really dumb. i know it's easy to say in hindsight now the raptors jumped, but it's the principle of it.
